Form X Material World: A Mad Scientist's Introduction

Material Launch Campaign

Where Creativity Meets Curiosity

Challenge

Formlabs wanted to introduce their innovative materials to consumers in a way that was both educational and creatively engaging. The challenge was to blend technical content with a whimsical, visually distinct style, drawing inspiration from Wes Anderson’s aesthetics, to capture the attention of a broader audience. Additionally, Form x, a sub-brand focused on fun and experimental product launches, required a unique campaign that resonated with its playful identity.

Solution
I collaborated with the team to develop a film series that used the quirky persona of a 'Mad Scientist' as a central character, providing thematic consistency across all content. The films featured a combination of vibrant color palettes, awkward visual styling, and offbeat humor to create a memorable viewer experience. I was responsible for developing the visual style, scripting, and storyboarding, ensuring that each film maintained a cohesive narrative while highlighting the unique qualities of Formlabs’ materials. I also oversaw the production, ensuring that each project captured the perfect balance between creativity and educational value.

Results
The film series successfully attracted consumer interest, blending creative storytelling with technical insights. By creating an engaging, visually distinct campaign, we not only showcased Formlabs' innovative materials but also strengthened the Form x sub-brand's playful, experimental image in the market.

""Color with Formlabs Color Kit "

In-House Production

We produced this film in the company's studio, using sets and props styled in the brand colors of the new materials line. Showcases a pastel-dominated color palette & symmetric compositions.

The 'Mad Scientist' character awkwardly introduces the concept of color, explaining, 'As perception shapes color, color too, shapes peception.' He illustrates how color can highlight functional elements like buttons on a flashlight and influence brand identity. He then continues by demonstrating how to use the product effectively.

"Ceramic Resin On Your Desktop "

In-House Production

Based on the succcess of the Colors launcch we produced out our second Form X materials campaign that foccused on Ceramics. This segment showcases the functionality & innovative uses of ceramics beyond traditional pottery, tying it to modern technological applications.

The film opens with the Mad Scientist character, who introduces the surprising role of ceramics in space exploration, specifically their critical use in NASA's Space Shuttle program during the 1980s. He explains, "While pottery is an art form we all know, ceramics themselves are the unsung heroes of space exploration." This introduction sets the stage for demonstrating the high-temperature resistance and insulation properties of ceramics.

The Mad Scientist then engages the audience with a direct call to action, inviting them to experiment like NASA using Formlabs ceramic resin. He outlines three simple steps to innovation: "First, design your rocket; second, print it; third, fire the part in a kiln." The segment concludes by emphasizing the experimental and groundbreaking potential of working with ceramic resin, inspiring viewers to 'launch' their creative ideas.

Additional creative assets were developed, including an educational series & video & photo materials for the Nervous System's jewelry line, Porifera.

"Welcome to Formlabs Berlin"

In-House Production

We wanted to wrap up the Mad Scientist series & while the third film diverges from the materials theme, it still maintains the stylistic & thematic consistency of the others.

The third film focuses on recruitment for the the companies Berlin office.  Introducing potential recruits to the company's culture & the exciting opportunities.

Was developed to showcase the companys unique character & designed to appeal to creative & innovative potential employees.
